Going Back to School with Social Anxiety

For students who experience social anxiety, the buzz and bustle of the back-to-school season can be extremely stressful rather than exciting and fun. Especially if they struggle to make friends, or worry about being judged, dealing with a child’s social anxiety as they go back to school can be very difficult. It is important to provide support and encouragement throughout the process, even if you may not understand why they feel this way.

It is important to acknowledge the child’s fears without dismissing them, and without allowing the child an escape route. Going to school is non-negotiable, but you can help them take steps to prepare themselves in useful ways, like preparing their clothes or backpack ahead of time. If your child is concerned about making friends, suggest some clubs or groups for them to join.

If your child still has concerns, and does not seem to adjust after school begins, you might consider a performance coach. Performance coaches can help a child talk through their concerns and work on concrete plans for improvement.

At Wellspring, we regard both adults and children as wholes, not just parts pieced together. For a child, struggling in one area can be overwhelming, and detrimental in all others. Let us know how we can help.

Practicing Gratitude

During a busy season like back-to-school, it can be hard to take a step back and remember to be at peace with who you are and the world around you. But gratitude can often be grounding, especially when you’re stressed. In the midst of this very busy time, as routines are changing for both you and your child, take a moment to remember to count your blessings and be thankful for the moment that you inhabit.

Dealing With Stress

For both children and adults, stress can feel overwhelming. But the key to overcoming stress is not to eliminate it, but to manage it and allow it to drive you. Stress is caused when things we care about are at stake, which is not inherently a bad thing. Identifying the source of your stress and developing a plan of action can make stressors powerful allies instead of day-ruining foes.
